21st Century Visitors to Canada Insurance provides emergency medical insurance for visitors to Canada, newly landed immigrants, or individuals in Canada on a student or work visa.

21st Century Policy Wording

Eligibility

  • Coverage is NOT AVAILABLE to any individual who:
    a) is travelling against the advice of a physician; or
    b) has been diagnosed with a terminal illness with less than two (2) years to live; or
    c) has been diagnosed with or received treatment within the last two (2) years for pancreatic, lung, brain, or liver cancer; or any type of cancer that has spread from one part or organ of the body to another not directly connected with it; or
    d) has had or is waiting for an organ or bone marrow transplant (excluding corneal transplant); or
    e) has a kidney condition requiring dialysis; or
    f) used home oxygen during the 12 months prior to the date of application; and/or
    g) you reside in a nursing home, home for the aged, other long term care facility or rehabilitation centre
  • An application cannot contain more than two applicants age 60 or older. Each applicant must pay their appropriate individual premium unless family rates apply.
  • Family rates are not available if any applicant is age 60 or older.

Coverage During Flight to/from Canada

Covered if purchased before leaving country of origin.

Sum Insured

$10,000 – $15,000 – $25,000 – $50,000 – $100,000 – $150,000
(If you purchase the aggregate policy limit of $100,000, your policy includes an additional $50,000 coverage for insured services that result from an injury.  Any portion(s) of your claim(s) related to sickness or disease will continue to have a maximum of $100,000 less any injury-related expenses paid.)

Deductible

Deductible Applies: Per person, per policy period (Excluding $2,500 disappearing deductible)
$2,500 *Disappearing Deductible Applies: Per person, per claim

  • $0 – $50 – $250  Available up to age 85
  • $500  Available to Age 86 and over ($500 is minimum deductible for anyone 86+)
  • $1,000 – $5,000 – $10,000 Available for any age
  • $2,500 (*Disappearing) for $25,000 aggregate policy limit Available to any age
  • $2,500 (*Disappearing) for $50,000 aggregate policy limit Available up to age 85
* Disappearing Deductible: The disappearing deductible option is available to any applicant who purchases an Aggregate Policy Limit of $25,000 or $50,000. All other deductible amounts are waived and replaced with a $2,500 per claim deductible that applies to sickness-related claims when eligible expenses, per claim, are $2,500 or less. For sickness-related eligible expenses over $2,500 per claim, the deductible amount is waived (disappears) and eligible expenses will be reimbursed from the first dollar.

Emergency Hospital

Semi-private hospital accommodation

Emergency Medical

  • Reasonable and customary charges for medical care received in or out of a hospital
  • Diagnostics, lab test and/or x-ray
  • Licensed local land ambulance service for emergency transportation
  • Private duty services of a registered nurse or licensed home care provider, and rental of medical appliances up to $5,000

Drugs or Medications

Up to $500 not exceeding a 30-day supply

Professional Services

Licensed acupuncturist, chiropodist, chiropractor, osteopath, physiotherapist or podiatrist when ordered by the attending physician up to a combined total of $1,000

Emergency Air Transportation / Return home

The cost of a stretcher fare on the most economical commercial flight or by air ambulance if medically necessary

Follow-up Visits

Follow-up visits are covered until the end of the medical emergency.

Accidental Dental

Up to $4,000 for emergency treatment for accidental blow to the face

Emergency Return Home

The extra cost of a one-way economy class transportation

Return of Deceased

Up to $7,500 for preparation of your body for cremation or burial, transportation to place of burial, and cost of related legal documentation

Accidental Death & Dismemberment

Up to $10,000 if an injury causes loss of life, two limbs or sight in both eyes resulting from an accidental injury
Up to $5,000 if an injury causes loss of one limb or sight in one eye

Pre-existing conditions

  • Age 0 to 59
    Standard Rate Category: Covered only if stable prior to the effective date
  • Age 60-85
    Stable Chronic Condition Option: Covered if you are eligible to purchase this option and have paid additional premium
  • Age 86 and over – All pre-existing conditions will be excluded from coverage

Waiting Period for Sickness-related Benefits

No waiting period applies if the insurance is purchased or activated, and 21st Century is notified, prior to the arrival date in Canada.
The following waiting periods will apply if the insurance is purchased after the arrival date in Canada:

  • Age 0-85 and within first 30 days of arrival – 72 Hour waiting period
  • Age 0 to 85 and 31 or more days after arrival date – 7 Day waiting period
  • Age 86 and over – 15 Day waiting period

Claims Procedures

Note: You must contact the Assistance Centre prior to receiving medical treatment: If you fail to contact the Assistance Centre you will have to pay 20% of the medical expenses we would normally pay under this insurance.
If it is medically impossible for you to call when the emergency happens, the 20% co-insurance will not apply. In this case, we ask that you call as soon as you can or that someone call on your behalf.
Claims must be reported within 30 days of occurrence.
Written proof of claim must be submitted within 90 days of occurrence.
