The RSA Insurance plan provides emergency medical insurance for visitors to Canada, newly landed immigrants, people with a Canadian work visa or parent/grandparent Super Visa, and Canadian residents ineligible for government health insurance.

RSA Travel Insurance Policy Wording

Eligibility

  • To be eligible for coverage under this plan, the applicant must:
    a) be a visitor to Canada, a person with a Canadian work visa or Super Visa, an immigrant to Canada or a Canadian resident, who is not eligible for a provincial or territorial government health insurance plan in Canada;
    b) be at least 15 days of age on the date of purchase;
    c) not be travelling against the medical advice of a physician and/or have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. A terminal illness means that you have a medical condition that is cause for a physician to estimate that you have less than 6 months to live or for which palliative care has been received.

Coverage During Flight to/from Canada

Covered if purchased before leaving country of origin.

Sum Insured

$10,000 – $15,000 – $25,000 – $50,000 – $100,000 or $150,000

Deductible

Deductible applies: Per person, Per claim

  • Age 0 to 85 – Standard: $100 deductible
    . – Optional: $0 – $1,000
  • Age 86 and over – $500 deductible

Emergency Hospital

Ward rate or coronary care unit, where necessary

Emergency Medical

  • Services of physician, surgeon, anaesthetist
  • Laboratory tests and/or x-ray
  • Ground ambulance or taxi to nearest hospital
  • Private duty services of a registered nurse when pre-approved by Global Excel
  • Medical appliances when pre-approved by Global Excel

Drugs or Medications

Up to $500 not exceeding a 30-day supply

Paramedical Services

Physiotherapist, chiropractor, chiropodist, osteopath, podiatrist when ordered by the attending physician and pre-approved by Global Excel
Up to $500 per practitioner for out-patient treatment
Acupuncture up to $500 with the purchase of a 365 day policy

Emergency Air Transportation or Return home

When pre-approved by Global Excel

  • Air ambulance to the nearest appropriate medical facility, to a Canadian hospital or to a hospital in your country of origin for medical treatment;
  • Transport on a licensed airline with an attendant (when required) for your emergency return to your country of origin or your province or territory of residence in Canada for immediate medical attention;
  • The fare for additional airline seats to accommodate a stretcher to return you to your country of origin or your province or territory of residence in Canada; or
  • Up to the cost of a one-way economy airfare to return you to your country of origin or your province or territory of residence in Canada.

Accidental Dental

Up to $3,000 to repair or replace natural or permanently attached artificial teeth damaged as a result of accidental blow to the face

Dental Emergencies

Up to $500 for the relief of acute pain to natural teeth, excluding fillings and repairs to dentures or other dental devices. This benefit excludes crowns and root canals.

Return of Deceased

Up to $10,000 for preparation of remains and homeward transportation of the deceased to country of origin; or
Up to $4,000 for cremation and/or burial at the place of death. The cost of the casket or urn is not covered by this benefit.

Flight Accident

Covered – Up to the sum insured in the case of death. Maximum $300,000 for all claimants involved in the same flight accident.

Pre-existing conditions

Plan 1: Provides coverage for stable pre-existing medical conditions in the 120 days prior to the effective date, up to the maximum sum insured option you selected as indicated on your confirmation of insurance.
Plan 2: Provides no coverage for any pre-existing medical conditions.

  • Age 49 or under – Plan 1 is available
  • Age 50 to 79 – Plan 1 or Plan 2 is available
  • Age 80 or over – Plan 2 is available

Waiting Period for Sickness-related Benefits

No waiting period if the policy is purchased prior to, or on, the expiry date of an existing RSA Visitors to Canada policy or if the policy is purchased prior to your arrival in Canada.
The following waiting periods will apply if the insurance is purchased after the arrival date in Canada:

  • Age 0 to 85 and within first 30 days of arrival – 48 Hour waiting period
  • Age 0 to 85 and more than 30 days after arrival date – 7 Day waiting period
  • Age 86 and over – 15 Day waiting period

Claims Procedures

Note: In the event of an emergency you must call Global Excel immediately:
Do not assume that someone will contact Global Excel on your behalf. It remains your responsibility to ensure that Global Excel has been contacted prior to receiving treatment or as soon as reasonably possible. Failure to do so limits benefits to 80% of eligible expenses to a maximum of $25,000 in the event of hospitalization, and to one outpatient consultation per sickness or injury.

Written notice of a claim must be given no later than 30 days after the date the claim arises.
Proof of claim must be submitted within 90 days of occurrence.
