The Manulife Travel Insurance for Visitors to Canada plan provides emergency medical insurance for visitors to Canada, new immigrants, Canadians not eligible for a government health plan, and persons who are in Canada on a work visa or a parent/grandparent Super Visa

Eligibility

  • You are not eligible for coverage under this policy if any of the following apply to you:
    a) you are travelling against the advice of a physician;
    b) you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness with
    less than 2 years to live;
    c)  you have a kidney condition requiring dialysis;
    d) you have used home oxygen during the 12 months prior to the date of application;
    e) you have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or any other form of dementia;
    f)  you are under 30 days or over 85 years of age (over 69 years of age for $150,000 Emergency Medical coverage);
    g) you reside in a nursing home, home for the aged, other long-term care facility or rehabilitation centre; and/or
    h) you require assistance with activities of daily living.

Coverage During Flight to/from Canada

Covered if purchased before leaving country of origin.

Sum Insured

$15,000 – $25,000 – $50,000 or $100,000 (Maximum age 85)
$150,000 (Maximum age 69)
$100,000 or $150,000 is available for people applying for or holding a parent/grandparent Super Visa

Deductible

Deductible applies: Per person, Per claim

  • Standard: $75
  • Optional: $0 – $500 – $1,000 – $2,500 – $5,000

Emergency Hospital

Semi-private hospital room

Emergency Medical

  • Services of physician, surgeon, anaesthetist
  • Diagnostics, lab test and/or x-ray
  • Licensed local ground ambulance to the nearest hospital
  • Services of a private duty nurse while in hospital
  • Rental or purchase (whichever is less) of medical appliances

Drugs or Medications

Drugs prescribed by a physician or dentist

Paramedical Services

Chiropractor, osteopath, acupuncturist, chiropodist, physiotherapist or podiatrist, up to $70 per visit to a maximum of $700 for a covered injury

Emergency Air Transportation / Return home

When recommended by physician or Manulife medical advisors, one or more of the following:

  • The extra cost of an economy class fare
  • A stretcher fare on a commercial flight, if medically necessary;
  • The return economy class fare of a qualified medical attendant to accompany you, and the attendant’s reasonable fees and expenses, if this is medically necessary or required by the airline; or
  • The cost of air ambulance transportation, if it is medically necessary.

Transportation of Family

When authorized and arranged by The Assistance Centre :

  • If travelling alone and admitted to a hospital for 5 days or more – up to $3,000 for return economy class airfare for one immediate family member or close friend to be with you.
  • Up to $500 for that person’s hotel and meals and cover him/her under the same Emergency Medical Insurance Plan purchased by you, until you are medically fit to return home.
  • If you are a child or if you are mentally or physically disabled and dependent for support on the visiting immediate family member, this benefit is available immediately upon your hospital admission.

Out of Pocket Expenses

Up to $100 for each 24 hour period to a maximum of $300 for telephone and television out-of-pocket expenses incurred by you when hospitalized for more than 72 hours

Child Care

When authorised and arranged by The Assistance Centre :
Up to $100 per day to a maximum of $300 per trip. The child(ren) must have been under your care during your trip.

Expenses to Return Children

When authorised and arranged by The Assistance Centre :
Expenses to return children under your care – If you are admitted to hospital for more than 24 hours or must return home because of an emergency

Follow-up Visits

Until the emergency is declared over by the attending physician or Manulife medical advisors

Accidental Dental

Up to $4,000 to repair damage to natural teeth or permanently attached artificial teeth caused by an accidental blow to the mouth

Dental Emergencies

Up to $300 for the relief of dental pain

Meals and Accommodation

When authorised and arranged by The Assistance Centre :
Up to $150 per day to a maximum of $1,500 when hospitalized

Expenses Related to Your Death

When authorised and arranged by The Assistance Centre :

  1. Up to $3,000 to have your body prepared where you die and the cost of the container, plus the return home of your body; or
  2. Up to $3,000 to have your body prepared and the cost of a standard burial container, plus up to $3,000 for your burial where you die; or
  3. Up to $3,000 to cremate your body where you die, plus the return home of your ashes.

In addition, if someone is legally required to identify your body and must travel to the place of your death, the return economy class fare for that person, as well as up to $300 for that person’s hotel and meal expenses. That person will also be covered for up to 72 hours under the same Emergency Medical Insurance Plan purchased by you.

Pre-existing conditions

  • Plan A: No benefits are payable for a pre-existing condition that existed within the 180 days prior to your effective date of insurance
  • Plan B: – No benefits are payable for a pre-existing condition that is not stable within 180 days of the effective date.
    Note: Plan B applicants 40 years of age or older must complete a medical questionnaire when applying.

Waiting Period for Sickness-related Benefits

No waiting period if the policy is purchased prior to the expiry date of an existing Manulife Visitors to Canada policy or if the policy is purchased prior to your date of arrival in Canada.
Otherwise the following waiting periods apply:

  • If you purchase the policy within 30 days of your arrival – 48 Hour waiting period
  • If you purchase the policy 30 days after your arrival – 8 Day waiting period

Claims Procedures

Note: In the event of an emergency you must call the Assistance Centre immediately.
Call prior to receiving medical treatment: If you  do not contact the Assistance Centre within 24 hours of hospitalization, you will have to pay 20% of the medical expenses we would normally pay under this insurance.
If it is medically impossible for you to call when the emergency happens, the 20% co-insurance will not apply. In this case, we ask that you call as soon as you can or that someone call on your behalf.
The Assistance Centre will verify and explain your coverage to you; refer you to a medical provider; arrange to have your covered expenses billed directly to us where possible; and monitor your medical condition.
Your claim and supporting documents must be sent within 90 days of your loss.
